Dublin’s newest crossing, the Rosie Hackett Bridge, was officially opened his afternoon. From 6am tomorrow morning it will be open for use, for pedestrians, cyclists, buses and taxis. South-bound LUAS trams will use it following the scheduled completion of the LUAS cross city project in 2017.

Lord Mayor Oisin Quinn, said it was an honour to be involved in the opening of the bridge which was named after woman who led Jacob’s workers in the 1913 Lockout, before taking such an active role in trade unionism and the struggle for Irish freedom.

“From 6am, we can say meet me at the Rosie”, he said. “By bike, bus or brogue, we can mosey across the Rosie.

Yesterday the finishing touches were being put in place for the opening of the Rosie Hackett Bridge in Dublin. The seasonal planting was lowered into the stainless steel planting troughs, integrated into the hardwood seating on the bridge. Protective plastic sheeting was stripped off to reveal the shiny aluminium bronze leaning rails and everything was given a good clean. The bridge, designed in collaboration with Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers was built by Graham Projects Ltd for Dublin City Council, and will be officially opened next Tuesday 20th May by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Oisín Quinn.

You may have noticed some interesting construction activity on the River Liffey quays in recent weeks, between O’Connell Bridge and Butt Bridge. It’s actually the early stages of construction of the new public transport bridge (designed by Seán Harrington Architects and Roughan & O’Donovan Consulting Engineers for Dublin City Council) connecting Marlborough Street to the north, and Hawkins Street on the south side. When completed, the bridge will facilitate certain Dublin Bus routes, and also the forthcoming Luas BX line (which will link the current red and green lines).

There are two main elements of current on-site works. The first is the remedial works to existing services along both the north and south quays, which need to be repositioned to a sufficient depth to allow the Luas to cross overhead. The second element is the works on the river, where sheet piles are being driven into the river bed (by piling machinery sited on the floating barge) to form a water-tight cofferdam adjacent to each quay wall. It is these cofferdams that will enable the bridge foundations to be excavated below the adjacent river level, without flooding of the excavation. The in-situ concrete abutments will also be formed within the coffer dams in due course.

Have a look if you are passing (in safety from either Butt Bridge or O’Connell Bridge), and we’ll post some further news as construction works continue.
