Seán Harrington is due to speak at the annual conference of the Society of Chartered Surveyors at the new National Conference Centre on 15th October.
Seán's lecture is entitled "Sustainability - The Human dimension", and he will set out that for truly sustainable buildings, they must be designed well, be properly used and last for a long time. To achieve this, people must also understand and love their buildings. Critical to this is inclusion and consultation before design starts, during the design process and at hand-over, with a clear explanation of how everything works. This will instill a sense of ownership and belonging which, along with good ongoing management, is critical for the longevity of the building. Seán will set out his beliefs that that good design and beauty are important sustainability issues, as unless people love their buildings, they wont want to be in them or look after them.
