Competition: March 2007
This open RIAI competition was for a new central library headquarters & cultural centre at Moran Park, Dun Laoghaire. We proposed to rationalise the urban form of this part of the town with a new public square overlooking the sea, which would act as a gateway to the library and a revived Moran Park.
The library foyer has been conceived as a new internal street linking the public square with Upper Georges Street in the town. On one side, the main library is expressed as a 4-5 storey spine building, addressing Haigh Terrace, while the cultural centre facilities address the eastern edge of Moran Park edge.
The library has been designed to provide an atmosphere of peace, quiet and concentration, yet be busy, active and bustling. This has been accomplished by locating book stacks and public areas along the new internal street, while quieter contemplative reading areas face onto Haigh Terrace on the opposite side.
