Feasibility
The Avoca Mines had been an important industry in Wicklow for many centuries up until their closure in 1982. We were appointed to advise on the preservation and enhancement of the unique industrial heritage of the area, and also to identify how tourism could assist this process and help boost the local economy.
We concluded that the initial target should be to raise awareness of the amenity, which would make future works viable. The completed plan included for the provision of access to the mines for walkers, the conversion of an existing building to a visitors centre and the development of a memorial park to miners.
