Limerick Regeneration

Client; Limerick Southside Regeneration Agency
Feasibility

In February 2008, as part of the regeneration and masterplanning of Southhill and Ballinacurra Weston in Limerick City, Seán Harrington Architects (as part of 'Treaty Design Group' which included Urban Initiatives) were asked to lead the design of typical replacement housing for the existing residents. We developed a design approach for a generic block of the masterplan. Characterised by the following:

• The block is made permeable by offset streets that allow for incident and landmarks.
• The street edges are defined and the internal homezone is linked by a series of pocket parks and play areas.
• The fronts of dwellings define the public realm and the back gardens are fully secure.
• Taller buildings terminate vistas and mark entrances.

This methodology is capable of being adapted to suit the local conditions of the area.
