St. Andrew’s Court

St. Andrew’s Court originally comprised two 5-storey 1970’s blocks of flats, with an open tarmac car park wasteland, which opened out onto Denzille Lane to the south. Security was poor, with little defensible space or sense of ownership, and the development had deteriorated badly in recent years.
In consultation with the existing community, we designed a new 3-storey mews terrace to complete the southern edge of a new resident’s courtyard, improving security and privacy to the redesigned secure courtyard, which now includes resident’s car parking and amenity facilities for all age groups.  The existing ground floor bed-sits were remodelled into large 1-bed ground floor apartments, with own front door access opening onto private patio areas.
The nine new dwellings along Denzille Lane are a continuous terrace, arranged as a interlocking and repeating groups of 3 dwellings. Each ensemble contains a 1-bedroom ground floor flat, a 2-bedroom house and a 3-bedroom maisonette, all clearly defined with blue and red brick and white render walls respectively. All dwellings face south, and are slightly set back from Denzille Lane with generous front yards, balconies and terraces, bin stores and railings, and the massing is stepped down on the north side to minimise overshadowing of the communal courtyard.
